January will be a tough month, there might be a spike in Coronavirus cases - NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has raised an alarm of January 2021 being a very tough month following the disregard for health protocols during the December holidays.

Speaking at the briefing of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 on Tuesday December 29, the Director-General of NCDC, Dr Chikwe Ihekweazu noted that the nation’s health system is struggling to cope with the increasing number of coronavirus infections daily. He added that a spike in Coronavirus infections in January is imminent.

Ihekweazu said;

“We just faced the worst week since we started responding to this outbreak. We had more cases in Nigeria last week than in any other previous week since the beginning of the outbreak.

“Pictures and videos from across the country paint a very disheartening situation because it appears that our messages, our appeals to Nigerians over the last few months have not been heeded and we have gone ahead with business as usual.

“Events centres are full, social activities are full and so it is no surprises that cases are rising.

“January will be a tough month, no doubt about it. So, we have to brace ourselves for the consequences of the activities that we have decided to carry out in December.”

Former Olympian, Lindsey Vonn and fiance P.K. Subban call off engagement after three years together

Lindsey Vonn and her fiance P.K. Subban are calling it quits after three years together.

The 36-year-old Olympic skier shared that she has split with her fiance, pro hockey player PK Subban, after three years together.

In her caption, the blonde beauty wrote, ''Over the past 3 years PK and I have had some incredible times together.

'He is a kind, good man, and someone I respect a great deal.'

'However, after much consideration, we have decided to move forward separately. We will always remain friends and love each other immensely. We ask that you please respect our privacy during this time.'

Former Olympian, Lindsey Vonn and fiance P.K. Subban call off engagement after three years together

The news comes two months after she said their wedding plans were on hold because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

'We are in a holding pattern,' said the star.

'With COVID, it just feels like there's no good option, you know? I don't have a timeline or a plan, we're just kind of going to wait and see.

'Obviously, his family is in Canada, so I can't physically get to Canada and they can't get here,' the star skier added. 'It'll happen eventually, we just don't know when.'

The couple said at the time they were 'not in a rush'.

'Neither of us are really worried about when we're going to get married,' Vonn commented. 'We know it's gonna happen, so we're not in a rush about it.'

'It's been great for us. We've really enjoyed the time together, as much as one can,' she reflected.

'When you're living together and you see each other every single day, 24 hours a day, you get to know each other pretty quickly. I think it's been good for us to really find out everything about each other, and I think we've gotten a lot closer throughout the whole process.'

Lindsey and PK began dating in December 2017 and went public with their romance in June of the following year.

Prior to that, Lindsey was married to fellow 2002 Olympian Thomas Vonn from 2007 until 2013.

Before her relationship with Subban kicked off, Lindsey dated golfer Tiger Woods from 2013 to 2015 and was linked to NFL assistant coach Kenan Smith for a year.

Barcelona legend and captain, Lionel Messi has raised doubts of his current club's ability to bring Neymar back to the club.

Neymar made a world-record €222 million move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 but has been consistently linked with a return to Camp Nou with Neymar last month asking for a reunion with Messi.

But Messi, who himself has been linked with a move to PSG, as his current deal expires in the summer, believes Barca's current financial difficulties will hamper Neymar's return to the Spanish giants.

Speaking to La Sexta, Messi said; "How do you pay Paris for the transfer?"

"It is not easy, it will be a difficult situation for the new president. He will have to be very intelligent, get everything in order and make many changes to make it go well.

"It will also be difficult to bring in players because we need money and there is no money. There are several important current players we need to fight again for everything and you have to pay them."

On Neymar's recent declaration that he wants to be Messi's team-mate again, he added: "He didn't say, 'Let's play,' he said, 'I'd like to play' … right?

"Yes, we talk from time to time. The three of us either with him or with Luis [Suarez] every day. We maintain the relationship."

Messi also commented on his relationship with Antoine Griezmann, after the French star's uncle hit out at the Argentine last month.

According to Messi, him and Griezmann get along just fine.

"The relationship is good, I already said it," Messi insisted. "I never had problems with him and I never did everything that was said, that I did not want his signing and all that, I think it was more than clarified.

"I have no problems, The relationship is good and sometimes we drink mate together in the dressing room and on trips. There is no kind of anything."

COVID19 variant: NCAA issues new Travel and Quarantine protocol for all passengers from the United Kingdom and South Africa

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has released new travel and quarantine protocols for all passengers arriving Nigeria from the United Kingdom and South Africa.

The NCAA Director-General, Musa Nuhu, issued the protocol and warnings in a letter released in Abuja on Sunday, December 27. Recall that a new variant of the novel Coronavirus has been recorded in the United Kingdom and South Africa. While other countries have barred all flights from these countries, the NCAA has decided to adopt new guidelines for passengers from these countries.

According to the letter, passengers from these countries must present the following documents in order to be allowed to board their flights to Nigeria.

“Pre-departure “PERMIT TO FLY/QR code“generated from the Nigeria International Travel Portal (https://nitp.ncdc.gov.ng) showing evidence of payment for the post-arrival day 7 COVID-19 PCR test and;

“Documentary evidence of a “NEGATIVE COVID-19“ PCR result done within 96 hours (4 days) of boarding from a verifiable laboratory or health facility”

The NCAA boss stated that passengers would be received and processed separately by the Public Health Authority on arrival in Nigeria. He added that all passengers would be required to self-isolate for seven days after arrival followed by a COVID-19 PCR test.

He stated that a dedicated register of arriving passengers from the United Kingdom and South Africa would be opened for enhanced surveillance and active enforcement of the protocols.

He stated that the failure of the airlines from UK and South Africa to adhere strictly to the new travel rules will attract a penalty of $3,500 for each passenger boarded.

“The Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 over the weekend issued new travel rules for passengers on direct flights from the UK and South Africa due to the variance of coronavirus discovered recently in these two countries.

“The penalty is a fine of $3,500 for each passenger boarded and who fails to meet the new travel measures recently announced by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19,” the letter read

The NCAA boss added that punitive measures shall also be taken against airlines that are non-compliant. These punitive measures include but not limited to the following:

“(i) Airlines shall be fined $3,500 (Three thousand five hundred dollars) for each defaulting passenger.

Thomas Tuchel is sacked by PSG with ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino 'set to replace him'

Thomas Tuchel is sacked by PSG with ex-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino

Thomas Tuchel has been sacked by Paris Saint-Germain and is set to be replaced by Mauricio Pochettino.

The former Borussia Dortmund boss, 47, who joined the club at the beginning of the 2018-19 season, won six trophies with Les Parisiens, including back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue in 2020.

But Wednesday night’s 4-0 win over Strasbourg was the end of the road for Tuchel despite PSG being third in the French league, just one point off top spot.

Before the game, Tuchel had given an interview in his homeland in which he was quoted as saying he had, at times, felt more like "a sports politician or sports minister than a coach" during his tenure.

After the win over Strasbourg, he attempted to clarify those comments to Canal+, saying: "I didn't say it's more about politics than sport, nor that I lost the fun of training. This is not true... It is possible they translated incorrectly.

"Watch the video interview. I just said that PSG are unique and that it's a big challenge for me. It's always been like that. I like this challenge and nothing has changed."

Asked for a second time about the remark, he added: "I gave a video interview to a journalist who told me to do a story about German coaches.

"It is not an interview for him. It is not allowed. I was making a joke in German. The translation is not correct. We cannot translate word for word.

"It was a joke while we were talking and it is not allowed."

Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is being lined up to take over from Tuchel with an announcement expected to be made soon.

Insecurity: ''Give our military and other security agencies more time''- President Buhari appeals to Nigerians in his Christmas message

Insecurity:

President Buhari has appealed to Nigerians to give the military and other security agencies more time to tackle the insecurity plaguing many parts of the country. The President made the appeal in his Christmas day message to Christians in the country.

The President in his message commended the military for the safe rescue of the Kankara schoolboys. He expressed sadness over the reported cases of abductions, particularly those whose victims are children.

''I wish to, therefore, enjoin fellow compatriots to appropriate the hope that comes with Christmas and reinvest trust in this Administration’s determination and unwavering commitment to restore peace, security and prosperity to our dear country.

Under my watch, the Federal Government will continue to provide the needed support within available resources to the gallant members of our armed forces and security agencies as they confront threats to our citizens. While I commend them for their efforts so far, I urge them to do more to checkmate increasing incidents of security threats especially in the northern parts of the country as well as the entire nation in varying degrees. Their display of tact, camaraderie, and expertise that led to the recent return of abducted schoolboys of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara, will remain a milestone in the annals of the country.

For me, providing security for all residents in the country remains an article of faith. It formed a vital segment of this Administration’s three-point agenda right from inception, and we must follow through with it.

I cannot in good conscience shirk this cardinal responsibility to secure lives and property. I feel pained each time a breach of peace and security occurs in any part of the nation. I am even more distressed when our youths, especially school children, are the targets and victims of mindless and malevolent elements in society. As a parent, I share the emotional torture and agony parents and guardians go through whenever their children and wards fall into the cruel hands of these enemies of decency and good society.

I plead with fellow compatriots to give our military and other security agencies more time, cooperation and support by volunteering credible intelligence/information on activities of armed bandits, insurgents and other criminal elements within their communities in order to put an end to this blight on our security landscape.

To be sure, the problems are beyond the simplistic options being bandied around. We shall remain focused on following the complex, multi-dimensional route to reducing the incidents of insecurity to the barest minimum. Our people must be free to live and move without let or hindrance. This is crucial not only to enthroning an atmosphere of calm and social cohesion, but for the economy to grow.

Let us use this season of goodwill and joy to renew our faith in the ability of this Administration to make a lasting difference in the lives of our hard-working people. Our Social Intervention measures and other economic policies are already yielding positive results even at modest rates.''

The President in his Christmas message said his administration guarantees the right to peaceful protest but that it will not fold its arms and allow the protest to degenerate into wanton killings and destruction of properties.

''Let me reiterate that while the right to peaceful association and protest is guaranteed under our laws, this Administration will not fold its arms and watch protests however well-intended, degenerate into wanton killings of law enforcement and other security personnel as well as destruction of private and national assets.''

He appealed to Nigerians to adhere strictly to all of the COVID19 protocols.

''There is every indication that our country is already experiencing a second wave of COVID-19 infection. As we celebrate Christmas with families and friends, I urge all citizens and residents to adhere strictly to the non-pharmaceutical prevention guidelines of regular hand-washing, wearing masks and social/physical distancing with a view to mitigating the spread of this devastating virus. While national and state institutions are trying their best, we must take individual responsibility and resist the strong temptation of compliance-fatigue by following the recommended protocols put in place by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 and beat the ravaging pandemic.

I have absolute confidence in the spirit of resilience of our people to do the needful and remain vigilant even as this festive season witnesses increased travels and celebrations. Staying alive to enjoy future festivals should be the watchword.''the President said

Another mutant form of Coronavirus discovered in Nigeria

Another mutant form of Coronavirus discovered in Nigeria

Another new variant of coronavirus has emerged in Nigeria, a leading public health official has said.

John Nkengasong, head of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, revealed the existence of the new P681H strain on Thursday, Dec 24, saying it is different from the ones found recently in the UK and South Africa.

The mutant strain of coronavirus has emerged as Nigeria reports a surge in the cases of coronavirus.

Coronavirus variants emerge routinely as the virus spreads. About 4,000 variants of the deadly virus has been recorded to date, but those in the UK and South Africa have been widely reported because scientists believe they are significantly more infectious than previous strains.

New variants can also affect the ability of coronavirus vaccines to fight the virus, though this is not thought to be the case with the UK or South African variant.

The Nigerian variant's potential effect on vaccines is so-far unclear.

"Give us some time," Dr Nkengasong said. "It's still very early."

The Nigerian variant was found in two patient samples collected on August 3 and October 9 in southern Osun state, a preliminary report into the virus said.

Unlike the variant seen in the UK, "we haven't observed such rapid rise of the lineage in Nigeria and do not have evidence to indicate that the P681H variant is contributing to increased transmission of the virus in Nigeria," the report added.
