Lagos state government denies plans to place religious leaders on salary

The Lagos State Government has debunked viral report on the social media suggesting that it was planning to commence paying salary to religious leaders in the State.

The state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Abdulateef Abdulhakeem who made the clarification while speaking on a television programme monitored in Lagos, said there was no iota of truth in the said report, and urged members of the public to disregard it in its entirety.

“The clear position is that the Lagos State Government is not intending to employ Imams and Pastors. There is no such plan and there is no willingness on our part to delve into a private realm. What exists in Lagos State is that there is a symbiotic relationship between the Lagos State Government and faith-based organizations and it is a mutually beneficial relationship which has contributed to the growth and development of the State,” Abdulhakeem said

In the said report, Abdulhakeem was quoted as saying that the State Government would soon place religious leaders on the State salary structure to encourage them to use their Pulpit and the Minbar to re-orientate citizenry to shun corruption and immorality.

Clarifying his statement, the Commissioner said: “I must have been misunderstood or misquoted. We were at a forum where we were trying to encourage religious leaders to be advocates against corruption because religious leaders have millions of adherents and they enjoy the allegiance of millions of followers and we expect them to use the Pulpit and the Minbar to advocate for good governance and selflessness so that they can influence their members positively. In Lagos State, one of the remarkable successes of the present administration is that we have cutting-edge approaches to relating with religious leaders and that is why Lagos remains the most peaceful and most religious crisis-free State in the federation inspite of our cosmopolitan nature.”

Already, the Commissioner said a structured approach had been put in place to relate with religious leaders in the State through the Nigeria Inter-Religious Council (NIREC) which consists of people nominated by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and the Muslim Community across the 57 Local Councils in the State.

According to him, “We have them at the State level; they meet regularly in the Home Affairs and instead of leaving them as dysfunctional silos, we ensure that there is an integrated approach. They meet regularly to interact on religious issues and the Governor, Mr Akinwunmi Ambode has even further decentralized that whereby over 700 of them were appointed based on their nominations and they are volunteers who are not paid anything. They come together to nip religious crisis at the bud''.

He added that the general approach of the State Government to religion was that of rule of law, good governance, constitutional democracy and more than anything, the observance and preservation of the fundamental human rights of Lagosians to freely practice their religion.

“Section 38 of the Constitution is very clear and explicit that every person is entitled to freedom of thought, conscience and religion including the freedom to change your religion and the freedom to either alone or in community with others practice, manifest and propagate your religion. Clearly, that is unequivocally telling you that religion is a private affair as far as the Lagos State Government is concerned,” Abdulhakeem said

Responding to a question on why the State Government was yet to implement a Court of Appeal judgment on the use of Hijab by school girls, Abdulhakeem said being a government which firmly believes in rule of law, the State Government was awaiting the pronouncement of the Supreme Court on the matter which, he said, was already before the apex court.

On taxes, the Commissioner said though religious institutions were exempted according to the State laws, but any religious body which engages in commercial activities was liable to pay tax.

“Religious institutions are not taxable under the Lagos laws but where religious institutions engage in business transactions like schools and so on, then such are liable to pay taxes but as far as the institution is concerned, it is exempted from paying tax. Also, those who convert their buildings into Mosque to avoid paying taxes, we have made it abundantly clear that you are not allowed to convert residential premises into religious centres. So, people should just respect God the way the Lagos State Government has respected God and do not come under that arena to avoid payment of taxes” he said.

Besides, the Commissioner said the State Government had already embarked on massive enlightenment and re-orientation against noise pollution by religious leaders, but any resident who is affected by such should however report either through the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) or the Ministry of Home Affairs for action.

22-year-old Italian-Nigerian athlete is the latest victim of recent spate of racially motivated attacks in Italy

Italian-Nigerian discus thrower, Daisy Osakue risks missing the European championships after being attacked overnight in Moncalieri, the province of Turin.

Osakue, who holds the Italian under-23 record for the discus and was born in Turin to Nigerian parents, was hit in the face by an egg hurled from a Fiat Doblò car at Moncalieri on Sunday.

She was taken with Turin's Oftalmico eye hospital with an injured cornea and needs surgery to remove a fragment of shell.

The incident follows a spate of racially motivated attacks in recent months in Italy that the opposition centre-left Democratic Party (PD) has linked to the tough comments and stance on migrants of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Carabinieri police sources, however, said race hate was not suspected in this case, adding that there has been other reports of eggs being thrown at passers-by from the Fiat Doblò in recent days.

However, Osakue said Monday she was attacked because she is black.

"They did it on purpose," Osakue said.
"They didn't want to hit me, as Daisy, they wanted to hit me as a young woman of colour. There are several prostitutes in that area and they will have mistook me for one of them.

"I have been the victim of episodes of racism before, but only verbal ones. "When you go from words to action if means another wall has been breached".

The 22-year-old said she should be OK and surgery isn't needed.

"Luckily it's only an abrasion," she said.
"With a few days rest and some drops I should be all right".

PD leader Maurizio Martina said that the government is in danger of being an accomplice to a rising wave of racism.

"Not seeing the serious risk that we are running after the multiplication of cases of violence on migrants is a huge mistake," Martina said in Naples.

"The problem is that there is a worrying racist spiral that should be acknowledged and fought. A government that does not recognise the problem becomes an accomplice in this spiral.
"We denounce the short-sightenedness of the government of (Interior Minister Matteo) Salvini and (Labour Minister Luigi) Di Maio and all those who make comments that deny the problem".

Martina made an appeal to other associations and civil-society bodies to join the PD in a big protest against the climate of race hate in September.
Salvini, meanwhile, dismissed as "nonsense" opposition assertions that Italy is in the midst of a racism emergency following a series of allegedly xenophobic attacks.

"Let's not talk nonsense," Salvini said when asked about the alarm sounded by the opposition, centre-left Democratic Party (PD) I point out that over the last three days alone the police have arrested 95 migrants while 414 others were reported to prosecutors.

"The mass immigration permitted by the Left in recent years has not helped, which is why I'm working to stop human traffickers and illegal immigrants"

He added that he condemned the attack on Osakue.

"I hope to meet her and see her compete as soon as possible," said Salvini, who is also deputy premier and leader of the rightwing League party.

"Every attack should be punished and condemned.
"I'll always be at the side of those who suffer violence".

Groom marries his beautiful bride then watches her die 18 hours later

A groom who got married to his sick bride only to watch her die 18 hours later has now spoken of his devastation.

Dave Mosher, 35, married Heather Lindsay Mosher, 31, with the knowledge that those were her final moments. He watched her smile as she lay on her sick bed and threw up her arms into the air triumphantly after they exchanged their vows. But beneath his smile was a feeling of "torture" for he knew she has only a short while to live.

18 hours later, Dave held the hands of his new wife as she breathed her last following a year-long cancer battle. Heather had been battling an aggressive type of breast cancer, known as triple negative breast cancer, for a year when she died.

Now, seven months on, Dave has bravely spoken out about his and Heather's wedding day and the devastating hours that followed.

"The wedding was torture for me," he told Mirror Online.

"Here I am - I'm in the final hours. I was a wreck throughout the service. We had to stop several times because Heather couldn't breathe. We then went back to her hospital room for the reception.

"On one side of the room we have food and cake and pictures - and on the other side of the room we have Heather who is hours away from dying.

"No-one knows how to react. We cut the cake and we had a nice moment there. For me, it was like torture, knowing what's just around the corner."

Dave was previously married to Ashley Mosher and they have two daughters, Sophia, 8, and Molly, 6. His ex-wife was present at the wedding with their kids and she took breathtaking pictures of the wedding.

Dave said that he had met with doctors before tying the knot.

"I had met with them a few hours before the wedding and asked, 'What are we looking at here?'" he said.

"They said, 'She's going to pass before the week's over'."

Dave from East Windsor, Connecticut, married Heather, who he calls his soulmate, in the hospital's chapel in Connecticut, US, on Friday, December 22 last year, as his two little girls proudly looked on. Despite wearing an oxygen mask to help her breathe, Heather smiled, laughed and shared tender embraces with loved ones throughout the day.

Dave and Heather before the tragedy

Dave's ex-wife Ashley paid tribute to Heather earlier this year.

She told Mirror Online: "Heather was adored and loved and treasured by my girls. She truly was the greatest stepmom. I honestly couldn't have hand-picked a better one."

The mum, who has since remarried and runs a photography firm went on to describe her emotional last moments with Heather as she lay in hospital.

"I held her hand, kissed her cheek, and told her that I was so very lucky, that my babies were so very lucky, for all the moments we had with her. I told her that I would keep her alive in our hearts and our memories. And I told her I loved her. She squeezed my hand and with all the energy she could muster, she said to me, 'I love you, Ash'."

After Heather's death, Dave and Ashley sat their daughters down together and told them their "bonus momma" had passed away.

"They just fell apart for a good 15 to 20 minutes," recalled Dave, who owns an insurance agency, a small farm and an investment property.

Heather's funeral was held on the same day, and at the same place, that she and Dave were supposed to have tied the knot.

Hundreds of African migrants celebrate as they enter Spain after forcing their way through the Border (photos)

Nearly 600 migrants stormed border fence and attack security forces to make it into Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco.

Spanish authorities said officers were assaulted with quicklime when migrants charged border fences separating Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco last Thursday.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil police force in Ceuta said the migrants managed to climb over the double barrier, which is covered in small blades.

They scrambled over 'all of a sudden, with much violence,' and some attacked police with quicklime they had in tubes and bottles. As a result, 'more than a dozen police' were injured with the substance, four of whom had to go to hospital for burns to their faces and arms.

According to the Spanish Red Cross, they called to check on 592 people after the massive charge, and they found out that 132 migrants had been injured as they scaled the high, barbed-wire fences.

In the videos below, the migrants were seen jubilating and dancing after they made it into Spain from Morocco.
